I hope that this letter finds you and your family in good spirits and good health enjoying this beautiful autumn. Our students are doing well as we proceed through the school year and are really beginning to settle in and to get a feel for school again. It has been exciting to go around to all of the different classrooms and to see all that the students are working on.

In our last school governance council and ELAC meeting we discussed giving more support to students who need extra help. We allocated $10,000 of our school monies to support after school interventions for students. We now have 36 students, soon to be 52, getting an extra half hour of reading tutoring four days a week after school. These students are in small groups from 3-7 students and they are getting specialized instruction, just at their level. We are also giving extra help to students after school with our one on one reading recovery program.

It is exciting to see this excellent academic intervention happening after school along with all of the other incredible enrichment opportunities that we have for kids. We have over 150 students participating in dance, music, language study and art, all after school. We are very fortunate to have the Rosa Parks collaborative here and the LEARNS after-school program to offer so much to our students. If you have questions about the program please contact our literacy coach, Jenn Corn, for academic intervention, and David Barba for our after-school enrichment program.

Starting on November 5th we have our parent/ teacher conferences. This is great time for you to sit down with your child’s teacher and have their undivided attention. This time to meet with your child’s teacher is crucial for you to have, to find out how to better support your child’s education. I know that our teachers are excited to meet with you and work with you in helping all of our children learn and grow.

Espero que esta carta los encuentre a ustedes y sus familias en espíritus buenos y salud buena y disfrutando de este hermoso otoño. Nuestros estudiantes hacen bien como continuamos con el año escolar y comenzamos realmente a acomodarnos y obtener un sentido para la escuela otra vez. Ha estado emocionando a andar alrededor a todos los salones diferentes y ver todo el trabajo que están haciendo los estudiantes.

En nuestro última junta de concilio de gobierno de escuela y ELAC discutimos sobre dando más apoyo a estudiantes que ocupan ayuda adicional. Asignamos $10.000 de nuestro dinero para apoyar intervenciones de después de escuela para estudiantes. Nosotros ahora tenemos 36 estudiantes, pronto será 52 recibiendo media hora de tutoría para leer cuatro días por semana después de la escuela. Estos estudiantes están en pequeños grupos de 3-7 estudiantes y ellos están recibiendo instrucción especializada, sólo en su nivel. Nosotros también damos ayuda extra a estudiantes después de la escuela con nuestro programa de recuperación de lectura, un maestro por un estudiante.

Hello Rosa Parks families!

The Family Resource Center would like to invite you to our next Tour of the World Family Night, scheduled for Wednesday, October 20 from 6-8 pm in the gym. The theme of this event is “Food Around the World,” and we’ll get to learn about foods from a variety of different places. Come to try…

• Chiles from Mexico, Matzah from Israel, maple syrup from New England, oatcakes from Scotland, coffee from Cuba, rice from Japan, and more!
• Enjoy a free dinner, including South American empanadas
• A special student performance, by the first graders of rooms 20 and room 16! (Sra’s Contreras and Donaldson-Fletcher)
• A great display of library books about foods and recipes from around the world
• A FUN opportunity to taste, smell, touch, compare, sample, and learn about foods from around the world with your family!

WE’LL HAVE A GREAT TIME!

As always, we need volunteer help to make these events happen. We are looking for:

• 4 people to do easy food prep the day of the event
• 3 people to help set up (5-6 pm)
• 5 people to serve food (5:30-6:30pm)
• 3 people to help clean up (7:45-8:30)

El Centro de Recursos Familiares tiene el gusto de invitarles a nuestra próxima noche familiar “Gira del Mundo”, que tendrá lugar el miércoles 20 de octubre, de 6 a 8 pm en el gimnasio. El tema de este evento es “La comida alrededor del mundo” y aprenderemos de comida de una variedad de lugares.

• Venga y pruebe: “Chiles de México, Matzah de Israel, Jarabe de Arce de Nueva Inglaterra, Tortas de Avena de Escocia, Arroz de Japón y más”
• Disfrute de una cena gratuita que incluirá empanadas de Sur América.
• Presentación especial, de los estudiantes de 1er. Grado (Salones 20 y 16: Sra’s Contreras y Donaldson-Fletcher)
• Una gran exhibición de los libros de la Biblioteca sobre comida y recetas de todo el mundo.
• Una divertida oportunidad de probar, oler, tocar, comparar, tener una muestra y aprender sobre la comida de alrededor del mundo con su familia!

Como siempre, necesitamos voluntarios para ayudar al desarrollo de estos eventos. Buscamos:

I hope that this letter finds you in good health and in good spirits as we enjoy this beautiful month of September here in Berkeley. School has started and it is hard to believe that we are already nearly one month into our time together. The students are happily attending classes and our new year is off and rolling.

Our kindergarten/ new student welcome sponsored by our PTA was really fun and we had over 80 people in attendance. Just a few days ago our first tour of the world event happened. We were celebrating and learning about sports and games from around the world. Over 200 people attended and were able to eat a wide variety of foods and have fun with one another.

As a staff we are focusing on three things this year. The first area of focus is building relationships with one another, you the parents and our students. The events mentioned above are part of our efforts to build strong relationships with you and your family. Research has shown that schools that have great relationships are high achieving schools.

Further, research has shown students have better attendance at schools that have good relationships. In this economy, attendance matters more than ever. In case you were not aware, every time a student misses school, whether they are excused or not, the school district loses funding. For this reason, and the learning benefits, it is imperative that students are here as much as possible.

Our second area of focus this year is literacy. Our school had a 58 point gain in our academic performance index score (API) last year. That was the highest gain of any school in the district! We plan to continue the hard work that was started last year in improving all students’ ability to read, write and to speak (many in two languages). Further, this year we are starting some intensive additional classes in reading after school and during school for students who need extra help.

Finally we are focused on creating a school where every student feels safe, respected and good about coming here. We will continue to work with our kids to promote a safe, respectful and responsible students body by recognizing these things in our kids. We also have created a team of teachers and outside specialist to help students who need extra support in the classroom.

As the year continues on we hope to continue to work and develop in these three areas. We hope that you will join us in working so that all students can be successful.

Espero que esta carta los encuentre bien de salud y en espíritus buenos como disfrutamos de este hermoso mes de septiembre aquí en Berkeley. La escuela ha comenzado y es difícil de creer que tenemos casi un mes en nuestro tiempo junto. Los estudiantes asisten felizmente a clases y nuestro año nuevo está marchando y arrollando.

Nuestro Kinder/Bienvenida Nueva de estudiante patrocinada por nuestra PTA fue realmente divertido y tuvimos más de 80 personas en la asistencia. Sólo hace unos días nuestra primera visita del acontecimiento mundial sucedió. Celebrábamos y aprendíamos acerca de deporte y juegos de alrededor del mundo. Más de 200 personas asistieron y pudieron comer una gran variedad de alimentos y divertirse con el uno al otro.

Como un personal nos centraremos en tres cosas este año. La primera área de foco construye las relaciones con el uno al otro, usted los padres y nuestros estudiantes. Los acontecimientos mencionados encima forman parte de nuestros esfuerzos de construir las relaciones fuertes con usted y con su familia. La investigación ha mostrado que las escuelas que tienen gran relaciones son escuelas que logran alto.

Aún más, la investigación ha mostrado que estudiantes tienen mejor asistencia en las escuelas que tienen las relaciones buenas. En esta economía, la asistencia importa más que nunca. En caso de que usted no estuviera enterado, cada vez que su estudiante falta la escuela, si son justificadas o no, el distrito escolar pierde financiamiento. Por esta razón, y para los beneficios de aprendizaje, es imprescindible que estudiantes estén aquí tan mucho como sea posible.

Nuestra segunda área de enfoca este año es capacidad de leer y escribir. Nuestra escuela tuvo una 58 ganancia del punto en nuestra cuenta académica de índice de desempeño (API) el año pasado. ¡Eso fue la ganancia más alta de cualquier escuela en el distrito! Planeamos continuar el trabajo dedicado que fue comenzado el año pasado a mejorar la capacidad de todos los estudiantes para leer, escribir y hablar (muchos en dos idiomas). Aún más, este año nosotros comenzamos algunas clases adicionales intensivas en leer después de que la escuela y durante la escuela para estudiantes que necesitan el apoyo adicional.

Por último nosotros somos centrados en crear una escuela donde cada estudiante se siente seguro, respetado y bueno acerca de venir aquí. Continuaremos trabajar con nuestros niños para promover un cuerpo seguro, respetuoso y responsable de estudiantes reconociendo estas cosas en nuestros niños. Welcome: PTA President Maya Karpinski called the meeting to order at 6:30PM, welcoming all attendees and announcing the PTA Missions – to continue collaborations between Parents, Teachers and the school to ensure a safe, nourishing, enriching environment for our children. Focus of meeting is on informing everyone of the PTA’s role and everyone’s part in contributing to that.

Free and Reduced Lunch forms: Every family to fill one out to help support the continuation of the school garden, and cooking classes.

Principal’s Report: Paco Furlan spoke about his goals at RP this year, including: Strong Relationships with teachers, parents, students, each other; Literacy and a Positive School Culture/Climate

Green Schoolyard: Suzanne Ingley, RP Parent and Science Teacher for 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th grades presented on the Green Schoolyard project, which for the past 5 years has been enhancing and greening our schoolyard.  The program needs more volunteers!
Need help keeping the Cool the Earth going (three year project in its 2nd year at RP now)

School Yard Work Day coming up soon – come help!

Green Schools Initiative: New grant received to help get RP Certified as a Green Star School – to build on all the things our community is already doing to be green and help set a standard for other schools in the area.  Training will be coming in November.

Introduction of PTA board members for the year:

Vice president Alice Kaswan – especially interested in helping develop a bigger vision and strategies for the PTA – in helping support teachers, raise funds, and network with the larger community.

Co-VP Leticia Masiel unfortunately unable to come to tonight’s meeting.

Membership – Maria Rohlsson – we have 250 members currently, she’s aiming for 400!

Secretary – Alma Prins – look for minutes on bulletin board and website

Room Parent Coordinator – Cathie Irwin   – collaborating with Jennifer Kagiwada , Volunteer Coordinator, to mobilize volunteers to help out at the school in all the ways it needs.  So far every class but one has a room parent.

Fundraising Chair – Amy Eden – Fundraising has brought in significantly more in the past few years.  Current events/efforts include:

• Chinook Book – formerly the Eco Metro Guide;
• One-More-Month Campaign – Kindergarten parents!  Donate a month of preschool costs that you are now saving to the school through the PTA.
• Winter Gala will be 2/5/10 – evening event with music, food, silent auction.
• Read-a-thon – has been a great success, takes place in Spring
• Carnival – at end of year, great community building and school-wide celebration

School Directory: Need volunteers to help make this come together in first half of year, have some people already who can do data entry.

Communications – Dan Abrahamson – – In collaboration with webmaster William Abernathy (willam@inch.com), who will be maintaining the website and making sure we have a functioning, successful e-tree in the near future!

Treasurers – Ellen Irie and Allison Wren   – need volunteer, i.e. a CPA? To help file taxes and/or do official audit of PTA’s books.

Currently we have a $68K reserve, will be discussing how to use it.

Bulletin Board – being maintained by Nancy Sabin and Hannah Karpilow – will need volunteers to help with this next year.

Patio Escolar Verde: Suzanne Ingley, padre de Rosa Parks y Maestra de Ciencias del 1ro., 2do., 4to. y 5to. grados, presentó el Proyecto del Patio Escolar Verde, el cual durante los pasados 5 años ha venido mejorando y haciendo más verde nuestro patio escolar. El programa necesita más voluntarios.

Es necesaria ayuda para mantener “Cool the Earth” (“Refresca la Tierra”) andando (proyecto a 3 años en su segundo año en Rosa Parks en este momento).

Muy pronto tendremos el Día de Trabajo del Patio Escolar. Vengan a ayudar!

Iniciativa de las Escuelas Verdes: se recibió un nuevo fondo para ayudar a la certificación de Rosa Parks como una “Green Star School” (“Escuela Estrella Verde”), para apoyarse en todas las acciones que nuestra comunidad lleva a cabo para ser “verde” y contribuir a fijar un estándar para otras escuelas en el área. El entrenamiento tendrá lugar en noviembre.

• Maratón de Lectura (Lee-ton). Ha tenido un éxito significativo. Ocurre durante la primavera.
• Carnaval-al final del año. Gran celebración de toda la escuela y para construir comunidad.

Directorio Escolar: son necesarios voluntarios para ayudar a que esto esté listo durante la primera mitad del año. Ya contamos con algunos que pueden contribuir con la transcripción de datos.

Webmaster William Abernathy (william@inch.com), quien se necragará del mantenimiento del sitio web y de asegurarse de que contamos con un árbol electrónico funcional y exitoso en un futuro cercano!
