I hope that this letter finds you in good health and in good spirits as we enjoy this beautiful month of September here in Berkeley. School has started and it is hard to believe that we are already nearly one month into our time together. The students are happily attending classes and our new year is off and rolling.

Our kindergarten/ new student welcome sponsored by our PTA was really fun and we had over 80 people in attendance. Just a few days ago our first tour of the world event happened. We were celebrating and learning about sports and games from around the world. Over 200 people attended and were able to eat a wide variety of foods and have fun with one another.

As a staff we are focusing on three things this year. The first area of focus is building relationships with one another, you the parents and our students. The events mentioned above are part of our efforts to build strong relationships with you and your family. Research has shown that schools that have great relationships are high achieving schools.

Further, research has shown students have better attendance at schools that have good relationships. In this economy, attendance matters more than ever. In case you were not aware, every time a student misses school, whether they are excused or not, the school district loses funding. For this reason, and the learning benefits, it is imperative that students are here as much as possible.

Our second area of focus this year is literacy. Our school had a 58 point gain in our academic performance index score (API) last year. That was the highest gain of any school in the district! We plan to continue the hard work that was started last year in improving all students’ ability to read, write and to speak (many in two languages). Further, this year we are starting some intensive additional classes in reading after school and during school for students who need extra help.

Finally we are focused on creating a school where every student feels safe, respected and good about coming here. We will continue to work with our kids to promote a safe, respectful and responsible students body by recognizing these things in our kids. We also have created a team of teachers and outside specialist to help students who need extra support in the classroom.

As the year continues on we hope to continue to work and develop in these three areas. We hope that you will join us in working so that all students can be successful.

Espero que esta carta los encuentre bien de salud y en espíritus buenos como disfrutamos de este hermoso mes de septiembre aquí en Berkeley. La escuela ha comenzado y es difícil de creer que tenemos casi un mes en nuestro tiempo junto. Los estudiantes asisten felizmente a clases y nuestro año nuevo está marchando y arrollando.

Nuestro Kinder/Bienvenida Nueva de estudiante patrocinada por nuestra PTA fue realmente divertido y tuvimos más de 80 personas en la asistencia. Sólo hace unos días nuestra primera visita del acontecimiento mundial sucedió. Celebrábamos y aprendíamos acerca de deporte y juegos de alrededor del mundo. Más de 200 personas asistieron y pudieron comer una gran variedad de alimentos y divertirse con el uno al otro.

Como un personal nos centraremos en tres cosas este año. La primera área de foco construye las relaciones con el uno al otro, usted los padres y nuestros estudiantes. Los acontecimientos mencionados encima forman parte de nuestros esfuerzos de construir las relaciones fuertes con usted y con su familia. La investigación ha mostrado que las escuelas que tienen gran relaciones son escuelas que logran alto.

Aún más, la investigación ha mostrado que estudiantes tienen mejor asistencia en las escuelas que tienen las relaciones buenas. En esta economía, la asistencia importa más que nunca. En caso de que usted no estuviera enterado, cada vez que su estudiante falta la escuela, si son justificadas o no, el distrito escolar pierde financiamiento. Por esta razón, y para los beneficios de aprendizaje, es imprescindible que estudiantes estén aquí tan mucho como sea posible.

Nuestra segunda área de enfoca este año es capacidad de leer y escribir. Nuestra escuela tuvo una 58 ganancia del punto en nuestra cuenta académica de índice de desempeño (API) el año pasado. ¡Eso fue la ganancia más alta de cualquier escuela en el distrito! Planeamos continuar el trabajo dedicado que fue comenzado el año pasado a mejorar la capacidad de todos los estudiantes para leer, escribir y hablar (muchos en dos idiomas). Aún más, este año nosotros comenzamos algunas clases adicionales intensivas en leer después de que la escuela y durante la escuela para estudiantes que necesitan el apoyo adicional.

Por último nosotros somos centrados en crear una escuela donde cada estudiante se siente seguro, respetado y bueno acerca de venir aquí. Continuaremos trabajar con nuestros niños para promover un cuerpo seguro, respetuoso y responsable de estudiantes reconociendo estas cosas en nuestros niños. I hope that this letter finds you and your family in good spirits and good health enjoying this beautiful autumn. Our students are doing well as we proceed through the school year and are really beginning to settle in and to get a feel for school again. It has been exciting to go around to all of the different classrooms and to see all that the students are working on.

In our last school governance council and ELAC meeting we discussed giving more support to students who need extra help. We allocated $10,000 of our school monies to support after school interventions for students. We now have 36 students, soon to be 52, getting an extra half hour of reading tutoring four days a week after school. These students are in small groups from 3-7 students and they are getting specialized instruction, just at their level. We are also giving extra help to students after school with our one on one reading recovery program.

It is exciting to see this excellent academic intervention happening after school along with all of the other incredible enrichment opportunities that we have for kids. We have over 150 students participating in dance, music, language study and art, all after school. We are very fortunate to have the Rosa Parks collaborative here and the LEARNS after-school program to offer so much to our students. If you have questions about the program please contact our literacy coach, Jenn Corn, for academic intervention, and David Barba for our after-school enrichment program.

Starting on November 5th we have our parent/ teacher conferences. This is great time for you to sit down with your child’s teacher and have their undivided attention. This time to meet with your child’s teacher is crucial for you to have, to find out how to better support your child’s education. I know that our teachers are excited to meet with you and work with you in helping all of our children learn and grow.

Espero que esta carta los encuentre a ustedes y sus familias en espíritus buenos y salud buena y disfrutando de este hermoso otoño. Nuestros estudiantes hacen bien como continuamos con el año escolar y comenzamos realmente a acomodarnos y obtener un sentido para la escuela otra vez. Ha estado emocionando a andar alrededor a todos los salones diferentes y ver todo el trabajo que están haciendo los estudiantes.

En nuestro última junta de concilio de gobierno de escuela y ELAC discutimos sobre dando más apoyo a estudiantes que ocupan ayuda adicional. Asignamos $10.000 de nuestro dinero para apoyar intervenciones de después de escuela para estudiantes. Nosotros ahora tenemos 36 estudiantes, pronto será 52 recibiendo media hora de tutoría para leer cuatro días por semana después de la escuela. Estos estudiantes están en pequeños grupos de 3-7 estudiantes y ellos están recibiendo instrucción especializada, sólo en su nivel. Nosotros también damos ayuda extra a estudiantes después de la escuela con nuestro programa de recuperación de lectura, un maestro por un estudiante.

Emociona a ver este excelente académico de intervención sucediendo después de escuela junto con todas las otras oportunidades increíbles de enriquecimiento que tengamos para niños. Somos muy afortunados tener el cooperativo de Rosa Parks aquí y LEARNS el programa de después de escuela a ofrecer tanto a nuestros estudiantes. Dear Rosa Parks families,

I hope that this letter finds you and your family in good health and enjoying this holiday season. I would like to focus this letter on all that we are thankful for here at Rosa Parks. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive community and such a dedicated staff working with our kids.

First off we are so excited and thankful that measures H and I passed. This means millions of dollars of cuts will be put off as a result of these two measures passing. Further it means that some needed upgrades in technology and facilities will be able to happen. I thank the school board, and all the volunteers that worked to get the word out, and I thank the community for showing such continued strong support for the school.

The second thing that I am thankful for is our amazing staff and the generosity of local and national granting agencies. Did you know that our staff wrote and received over $10,000 worth of grants from the Donors Choose Organizations? Further, did you know that our staff wrote and received over $15,000 in grants from the Berkeley Public Education foundation? These grants have brought us books in Spanish for our bilingual program, after school tutors, a rain water catchment system, technology and many, many more things.

I am also thankful for the amazing parents that we have here at our school. I have seen so many of you in volunteering in classrooms, planning events, and serving the school on groups such as the PTA and the school governance council. Your efforts make the school a better place for ALL of the students here. In just a few days we will start our perspective parent tours, and a number of you will be helping us recruit next year’s kindergarten class.

Rosa Parks is truly a special place and a place we should all be thankful to be a part of. Please take a moment to reflect on what a great place this is because of YOU, the community. Our PTA has just started a direct fund drive, and if you feel compelled to give, I am sure we can put the resources to good use. Have a wonderful holiday and we look forward to the closing weeks of December.

Queridas familias de Rosa Parks,

Ojala esta carta los encuentre a Vds y sus familias en buena salud, gozando de estos dias de fiesta. Quisiera dar gracias especial en esta carta por todo lo que tenemos y hemos logrado aqui en Roas Parks. Cuanto agradecemos esta dedicada comunidad que da tanto apoyo a nuestros programas que sirven sus ninos. Igual agradecemos a los maestros y toda una variedad de ayudantes que nos ayudan a funcionar.

Que agradecidos estamos por el don de H y I. Este don quiere decir que no vamos a perder los millions de dolares que quierrian cortar. Adema, ahora vamos a poder mejorar ciertas tecnologias y guardar todo lo que hemos logrado. Cuanto les agradezco a todos que trabajaron para que pasara H & I y los directores y toda la comunidad que sigue con su dedicado apoyo para Rosa Parks School.

Agradecidisimos estamos por los maestros que nos sirven con tanta dedicacacion. También estamos agradecidos por los padres y parientes que tnemeos aqui en nuestra escuela. He visto a tantos de Vds.. visitando y ayudando en las salas, ayudando a planear actividades y sirviendo con la PTA y otros grupos como el concejo de gobernar la escuela. Nuestra PTA ha comenzado un plan para pedir recursos para aumentar nuestros programas. Mil gracias por sus entusiasmos para implementar en Rosa Parks la major educacion pare todos aqui. Esta semana com ienzan las visitas, “los tours” para familias que tienen interes para el ano que entra y varios de Vds han expresado interes en ayudar a buscar la proxima clase de kinder. : ) Gracias por toda su ayuda e interes en esto.

Rosa Parks es un lugar muy especial, un lugar que atrae cierto tipo de persona, cierto tipo de entusiasmo, un tipo participante. Ojala tomen unos pocos minutes para reflejar sobre el ambiente participante que tenemos aqui, una comunidad que quiere servir. Es lo que falta en nuestra cultura tan aquisitiva. Servir a nuestra proxima generacion. Han hecho un gran compromise al futuro. Otra vez gracia. Que pasen felices estos dias de fiestas, gozando estos ultimos dias de diciembre.
