Environmental Science

Through a federal magnet school grant awarded to the Berkeley Unified School District in 1998, Rosa Parks School created an environmental sciences program. An integrated part of the overall curriculum at the school, this coordinated program builds incrementally from Kindergarten through fifth grade. Its goal is to develop scientific thinking processes from observations to independent investigation.

The science curriculum focuses on three themes:

LAND (the study of cycles and systems of the natural world, environmental concerns, and gardening).
AIR, WEATHER, AND SPACE (the study of the atmosphere and our universe).
WATER (understanding its properties, and an in-depth study of aquatic habitats).

These themes incorporate scientific learning, environmental awareness, and critical thinking. Each theme culminates with seasonal celebrations: Fall Harvest Festival, Winter Star Dome, and Spring Ocean Week. Activities are scheduled during school hours, and at family evening events.

Every week, students visit the science lab for hands-on experience with the science lab for hands-on experience with the science teacher. The garden teacher provides a science-and-nutrition-based program in a natural, outdoor setting, while the cooking instructor shows students how to prepare healthy foods. The computer lab enhances instruction in science, math and language arts with a focus on non-fiction reading and writing.

We are extremely proud of our science program and the highly qualified professionals behind it. We hope to maintain the outstanding quality of this program through the generosity of our community members.
