I am a Mexican-born primary Two-Way Immersion teacher at Rosa Parks
with fourteen years of teaching experience in California classrooms,
most at Berkeley Unified. I’ve worked for fifteen years as a
professional poet-teacher with California Poets in the Schools (CPITS),
both teaching students and training teachers to implement a
poetry-guide. My students have published or shown work on Univisión
channel 14, in the Monthly Review, at the Oakland Museum, the
television show Wee Poets, KPOO radio, Street Spirit newspaper, at
public readings and in local and national publications such as the
literature series, Hampton-Brown’s A Chorus of Cultures. I also hold
an M.F.A in creative writing and have published two books. My
translations, poems, stories and articles have appeared in the Utne
Reader, Monthly Review, Z-net, Counterpunch, the San Francisco Bay
Guardian, the Berkeley Daily Planet, City Lights, Hampton Brown,
France’s Le Courier and Canada’s Scoop. My memoir, Through the Wall:
A Year in Havana, was a top nomination for the 2006 American Book
