The Rosa Parks PTA organizes a read-a-thon every year, and it is a great opportunity for the community to support the students’ reading, and provide support for the school. During the 2017 read-a-thon, which runs from March 8th-24th, students will be asking relatives, friends, and neighbors to make a pledge to support their efforts to read as much as they can. After the reading ends on March 24th, students will report on how much they read to their sponsors and collect money from the sponsors.
Donations made through the read-a-thon are tax deductible, and can be made electronically (link below), by check payable to the Rosa Parks PTA (with “read-a-thon” in the subject line), or by giving cash to the students who will turn it in to the teachers.
Here are some important read-a-thon dates:
Wednesday March 8 – Read-a-thon packets will be in Wednesday envelopes. Packets will have instructions, pledge forms, and reading logs. Students can start asking members of their community to support their reading efforts by sponsoring them in the read-a-thon. Sponsors make pledges, which are collected after reading ends on March 24th. They can keep asking sponsors to be part of the read-a-thon until the last day.
Sunday March 12 – Pegasus Books on Solano hosting Rosa Parks in-store book fair from 12pm-3:30pm (and donating 20% of all sales mentioning Rosa Park from 3/12-3/24 if people mention Rosa Parks at checkout!). Teacher Brook will read her new book, and other Rosa Parks teachers will also do readings. Pegasus will organize stacks of teacher-requested books which will be available for the public to purchase for Rosa Parks classrooms and the school library. This will be a fun kick-off to the read-a-thon.
Monday morning March 13 – Reading begins! Start logging those minutes!
Thursday March 16 – Pop-up book giveaway on the stage during recess
Tuesday March 21 – Dress as Your Favorite Character Day
Friday March 24 at 3pm – Read-a-thon ends. Count up your minutes! Contact your sponsors!
March 27-28 – Pledge Forms, reading logs, and any donations collected turned into teachers. Students can continue to turn in donations all week.
