Join us March 12-23rd, 2018 to support READING!

Rosa Parks PTA Annual Read-a-thon is a great opportunity for our community to support student reading initiatives and provide support for the school. Students will ask relatives, friends, and neighbors to make a pledge to support their efforts to read as much as they can.  After the reading ends, students will report on how much they read to their sponsors and collect money from the sponsors.

Donations made through the Read-a-thon are tax deductible, and can be made electronically, by check payable to the Rosa Parks PTA (with “read-a-thon” in the subject line), or by giving cash to the students who will turn it in to the teachers.

Once you’ve entered your credit card details or your Paypal account login, you’ll see a confirmation page where you will be prompted to enter the student’s name. This is optional.

The money raised from our Read-a-thon supports essential school programs such as reading and math intervention programs and enrichment activities.

Important Read-a-thon 2018 Dates Below (English/Spanish PDFs of the calendar).

March 7th Read-a-thon packets will be in Wednesday envelopes.  Packets will have instructions, pledge forms, and reading logs. From now until March 23, students begin asking members of their community to support their reading efforts by sponsoring them in the read-a-thon.  Sponsors make pledges, which are collected after reading ends on March 23rd.

March 12thReading begins! Students keep track of all non-classroom reading time in a daily reading log.   Note: Teachers keep track of classroom reading on a separate classroom chart and will report the total at the end of the read-a-thon.  

March 16th  – Pop-up book giveaway on stage during recess periods.  Free books for kids!!

March 17th – Pegasus Books on Solano is hosting a “Rosa Parks in-store book fairfrom 12-3:00PM.  Mention “Rosa Parks” at check out and they will donate 20% of the sale to your school.  Rosa Parks teachers will do readings and a performance by “Rumicello”. Pegasus will organize stacks of teacher-requested books which will be available for the public to purchase for RP classrooms and the school library. This is a fun community event during the read-a-thon.  Check out the flyer for more details.

March 20thZachary’s on Solano will give 15% to Rosa Parks by mentioning Rosa Parks (or bringing the flyer). Check out the flyer for more details.

March 21st – Dress as a book character day! Come to school dressed as a character from a book that you like.

March 23rdRead-a-thon ends at 3pm.  Teachers total classroom reading time, take a picture of their classroom’s read-a-thon chart, and send it home and to tally team.  Over the weekend, students/caregivers add up their total time read outside the classroom, and enter this amount in the read-a-thon reading log.  This will be added to the classroom total. Students notify their sponsors how much they read and start collecting pledges.*

March 26-28– Students bring reading logs, pledge forms, and any cash or check pledges they have collected to school in a sealed envelope; turn in to teachers.  Donations can continue be turned in throughout the week, to teachers.

March 30th – Winners announced!  There will be lots of winners and fun prizes, including gift certificates, a pizza party, popsicle parties, trophies, and more.  At a morning assembly, Mr. Furlan will announce the winners. In addition, every student who gets 10 or more sponsors will have a raffle ticket placed inside the big trophy, from which Mr. Furlan will randomly draw 5 names to select a crew of students who get to slime him at the end of the assembly.

Sponsors may fulfill pledges through online donations, or, students may collect and turn in cash/checks (payable to Rosa Parks PTA).
